D16A1 Electronic Advance in Gen 1/3 CRX/Civic Wiring

After tons of searching i was unable to find a good article on doing this swap. So I decided to do my own. This guide will detail step by step how to wire up a 1g civic or 3g crx si for electonic advance for use when doing a D16A1 swap. In order to do this youw will need the following:

Civic/CRX engine wiring harness
88/89 integra wiring harness for plugs
Extra set of ECU plugs with wire for adding pins to stock plugs
Solder
Soldering iron
Heat Shrink

Engine Harness Preperation:

Notice the color of the wires for the distributor plug. Honda did us favor here and didn't change the color of the wires.

Go ahead and cut this plug off. You will also want to cut off the distributor plug from the integra harness. Make sure to leave a couple inches of wire so that we can splice these to the SI Harness.

Next, we need to splice the four wires from the civic/crx harness to the plug from the distributor plug. Match the colors up from the engine harness to the plug.

You will notice there are two white wires. The one you want to splice from the engine harness to the plug is pin D. You will also want to solder a length of wire to pin C. Make sure to add enough wire to get into the car and to the ECU. This extra wire will be for the ignitor.

Chassis Harness Modification

The original harness is wired for an external coil. We are going to to need to extend this to the distributor as the electronic advance distributor has the coil inside the distributor. To do this we will want to start by stiping out the 2 plug connector and as much length of wire from the Integra harness. They should look like this.

These are the plugs that you are looking for. You have already cut off the square one but we are needing the round one now.

Now we are going to want to cut the plug off of the chassis harness where it plugged into the old coil. We are then going to match the black and blue wire and splice them.

Now that this is done, route it over and plug it into the round plug on the distributor.

Next we will need to remove another plug and some wire from the Integra Harness. Again, we are going to want to get as much length of wire as possible. The plug/wire we are after is the one going to the CPS. It is a small green 2 pin plug. Go ahead and plug this into the CPS and leave the excess. We will be running this into the car.

This is the plug we are looking for

Here it is plugged in to the CPS

The last thing we need to do is add the plug for the EACV. I do not have a picture of that but you can pull those out of the integra harness the same way we did the others. Go ahead and plug that into the EACV on the back of the intake manifold. You now need to extend the blue wire over to the drivers side frame rail to where you see these plugs. ( I need to add better pictures and get more details on this part as I do not remember off the top of my head.)

The other wire from the EACV needs to be run a switched power source.

Now onto the in car wiring. We should have 2 wires from the CPS and 1 from the distributor. Run these wires into the car threw the firewall and to under the passanger seat.

The black wire in this pic is the power wire for the EACV.

We will need to do some changes to the harness now. We need to move Pin C1 to B10 and Pin C2 to C12. I perfer to depin and move but you can also cut and solder them to two new wires that you will need to add to the B plug. Next you will need to run the two wires from CPS to C1 and C2. Lastly you will need to wire the white ignitor wire you extended from the distributor to B3 and B5

That is pretty much it. With this setup you will still get two cels. ELD and VSS neither of which will effect how the car runs. I will soon be adding how to fix these two also. Good luck and please post questions if you have any so that we can help make this guide as simple as possible.

which connector? All the plugs from the SI CRX harness should work except the distributor plugs.

Re: D16A1 Electronic Advance in Gen 1/3 CRX/Civic Wiring

Ive been looking for this info on RPR's website for days, good job you just saved me alot of work. The cars gotta rollcage and I was worried about being able to pull the dash to get the wiring done. Planned on a full engine/cabin harness/cluster swap but not anymore. Youre writeup just simplified it all. Its a 86 civic and not a 85 so the distributor plug may already be the sqare one, ill have to check. Thanx for doin this....

? though, couldnt I just run the EACV wire to the ecu and pin it in the proper spot instead back across the engine bay?

Yes, you could run both back to the ECU if you wish or you could run them to the front left by the engine mount and connect to two of the old black box wires to make it work. Connector C-110 Gr/Wh gets connected to the EACV Bu/Y and the two Bl/Y wires get mated up and your done.

The same thread is on the RPR site. JS
