The 88/91 CRX Si/HF/ZC Never-ending Build

Hey guys, I've been around here on and off for about 5 years now which is pretty amazing now that I think about it. Anyway, thought I'd start up an "official" build thread for my ride.

It all started here.

I needed a new daily driver and I told my friend that I wanted something simple, fun, low cost, and easy to get parts for and that I had come up with a word to describe exactly that. I told him I would call it a Honda. Anyway, sillyness aside, I always wanted a CRX so I hunted down an 88 Si with 183k miles on it. It ran and drove, came with some extra parts, and I bought it for $200.

A friend had researched D-series motors before and turned me on to the ZC. So I ordered one up, we stripped down the Si, and got the whole thing knocked together. It worked out easy because we found that the 88 Si chassis side wiring harness perfectly matched the ZC engine wiring harness that I happened to get fully intact on my ZC engine.

We replaced all the front suspension parts and threw an Energy Suspension bushing kit at it. The car ran great and was a complete blast. But after a year and a half or so the rust was so bad that the State of Rhode Island decided it didn't like me driving around like that. The CRX got parked for about 6 months.

Then, REBIRTH! I scored a decent 91 HF chassis and literally swapped everything but the gas tank from the 88 Si to the 91 HF, including the full electrical harness. It was about 2 full days worth of work but it started right up and ran like a champ.

I got a set of winter snows and then ran Falken Azenis RT-615s in the summer on the HX wheels. The car has been wonderful to drive but then this last year started to show some clutch slippage. Not surprising as I installed the ZC engine/trans combo without opening it up to check the clutch when I first bought it 5 years and 50k miles ago. I was limping it along and even took it up to the track when I friend of mine decided to take his 12 second Nova up.

With 200lbs of junk in the back and a slipping clutch it wasn't pretty but we had fun. Best time of the night was a 16.1 @ 88.72mph with a 2.615 60ft time. If you tried to launch at torque peak the tires would hold but you'd slip the clutch and have to back off in 1st and baby it in 2nd. If you launched anywhere near HP peak you'd just one-leg it off the line and still have to baby 2nd.

A friend of mine borrowed the CRX for 2 weeks until we could weld up the frame on his Jeep (TJ Wranglers have a frame design that just doesn't make sense to me) and when I got it back the clutch was completely gone. But after playing at the track with it I was ready to do some part hunting and bring it to the place I always wanted to.

So, now I have an unidentified ZC cluth-type LSD high ratio transmission and a ZC JRSC to throw at it. The goal now is to get the trans in and running with a decent clutch and flywheel. Then she will go back up to the track to see what she could actually do in mild form. Immediately after that I'll grab some larger injectors (probably the DSM 450s) and get it running cleanly on those because I'd rather not use JRs "solution" for fueling the SC but would rather tune it outright on Turboedit. The JRSC will then go on and then we will see what breaks first at the track.

Anyway, that's the story so far and I'll keep you guys updated as I go along. None of this could have been possible without all the help I've gotten here so thanks a bunch guys. The technical information and general niceness around here makes it a great place and I hope it continues to stay that way.

Awesome man! Not sure how I missed hour thread. Driving a car with a slipping clutch is fun, isn't it?

Re: The 88/91 CRX Si/HF/ZC Never-ending Build

Man, I've been looking at clutches all day. Too many choices!

I'm trying (of course) to keep my budget reasonable so I can do all that I need to.

I have been looking at the LSD clutches as they seem like a really good value for money. In particular the 6-puck sprung disc looks interesting:

LSD Tuner Clutch Kit w/ 6-Puck Sprung Disk - $236

With my setup I'm wondering if I could maybe get away with the next one down though:

LSD Racer Clutch Kit w/ 6-Puck Sprung Disk - $163

I'm a little concerned that street driving with the 6-puck could be more trouble than it's worth but I have no experience with it. I'm also a little worried that these aren't the best solution for me.

I really like the idea of these segmented kevlar/carbon setups but darn it if they aren't $400!

Competition Clutch Stage 3 - Street-Strip Series 2300 Clutch Kit - $383

Action Clutch HONDA-1KS - $345
Action Clutch HONDA-2KS - $385

But I love the idea of great clutch life, great holding ability, and ease of use.

The CRX will be road driven and hit the track from time to time. I'm figuring that I probably am not going to see much more than 200hp or so when everything is all set and done.

Looking through some more old posts here (I think it was from The_Acid_Beaver) I checked out South Bend: http://www.dxdracingclutches.com/

They offer the TZ which is a kevlar/carbon for $275. That is looking like a nice option.

I mean. I have a 6 puck in my Legend. I like pucks more than full faced.

Why is that?

Re: The 88/91 CRX Si/HF/ZC Never-ending Build

Usually, it increases grip without needing a heavier pressure plate. There is no need for heavy pressure plates, hence my utter HATE of ACT clutches. They hammer your thrust bearings. Granted, on my CRX I have an old skool CM Stage 3 that has a retardedly heavy clutch pedal, but, it is controllable. It will also outlast the car, if you take care of it when you break it in. It's a full face carbon/kevlar clutch. But, the DXD clutch in my Legend has a wickedly light pedal, but will hold a looooot of torque.

This is also why I recommend the action and Comp clutches, especially the 6-pucks. They are worth the money.

Re: The 88/91 CRX Si/HF/ZC Never-ending Build

Well, I'd say it's down to either the kevlar TZ from Southbend or a 6-puck from either them or Action.

Maybe I'm being overly worried about driving the 6-puck on the street.

I HAAAAAATE! pulling trannies. I buy good clutches. LSD clutches are fine, really, but, I prefer forged hubs and springs, and much higher quality materials.

Re: The 88/91 CRX Si/HF/ZC Never-ending Build

It's a sad/happy day here. I just sold one of my other projects, a 1972 Ford Bronco.

I loved that truck, but it means more room around here and more funding to finish the CRX.

I think I've decided on the DXD (SouthBend) TZ Kevlar clutch. I'm looking at the available flywheels and will have it all here soon now that I've got a little more cash.
