This is the leadscrew on one of the lathes at work. It spins and the gear you see at the far left drives the saddle, which holds the tool that makes threads. You control the speed of the rotation of the leadscrew to make different pitch threads on different sizes of material. Lately, I have been making threads on 3" material. It is a lot of work.
